The much-awaited sports program of the year, 2022 Commonwealth Games is all set to kick start after a couple of months, from 28th July 2022 at Birmingham, England. This time the competition will feature 283 sports in 20 disciplines, where a total of 5,054 athletes are expected to participate from different nations.
The XXII Commonwealth Games in total will have 270 medals with 136 medals will be awarded to women athletes and 134 to men athletes. As we approach closer to this big event, here we have listed the best performing countries at Commonwealth Games.
Australia tops the list of the best-performing country in the commonwealth games. The athletes have shown all-round performance in the event and have dominated successfully with a total of 932 gold medals from a total of 2416 medals.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be hosted by England in the capital city of Birmingham. Out of 2144 medals, the athletes have won 714 gold medals, which is a record performance at the summer event. It is no doubt the nation is going to continue the winning streak at the upcoming global event.
Canada is the only nation among the best-performing countries that have participated in every commonwealth game. They hosted the event for the first time in 1930 and so far the athletes have won a total of 480 gold medals out of 1555, where their best came at the 1988 games with an outstanding 51 gold medals.
The performance of the Indian athletes flourished at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where they managed to bag a staggering 101 medals. India is placed at number four position with a total of 182 gold medals out of 502 medals and the athletes are ready to claim another big win at the Birmingham Commonwealth 2022 Games.
5. New Zealand
New Zealand is placed in the top fifth position in the best-performing countries at commonwealth games. The athletes have dominated at the Rugby Commonwealth Games with a total of 159 gold medals out of 657 won. It was at the 2018 commonwealth games, the country helmed seven gold medals at the Rugby event.
6. South Africa
With 130 gold medals out of 389 medals, this African country is the most successful in the history of the commonwealth games. The athletes have so far shown commendable performance at the event even after being temporarily staying out from 1961 and 1994 South Africa’s apartheid policy.
Out of the 451 medals, the Scottish athletes have been successful to clinch 119 gold medals, and this time they are eagerly waiting to mark their presence in the summer games. The country came into the limelight at the 2002 and 2006 commonwealth games, when Sir Chris, won a gold medal in cycling.
Similar to Nigeria, its neighboring country Kenya is well known for its top performers that excelled at the 2014 games with 23 medals in athletics. Kenya athletes showcased their talent at this important event, with 85 gold medals is ranking at the 8th position.
This African country has proved its dominance in the powerlifting sports discipline and is the only country to bag the most medals at the 2014 Glasgow Games. With a total of 236 medals, 70 are gold medals and the athletes from the nation are expecting to perform their best to rank better in the list.
Wales is placed at the 10th position in the best-performing countries at commonwealth games with a total of 306 medals. Out of these 306 medals, the athletes from the country have won 98 silver medals, and 67 gold medals since the inception of the competition.
