Team Scotland athletes to watch at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

England to host commonwealth games in Birmingham for the first time, since 2002 in Manchester. The opening ceremony will kick start on 28th July 2022 Thursday at Alexander Stadium. Duran Duran will perform at Commonwealth Games 2022 opening ceremony. So people of Birmingham city eagerly waiting to enjoy the game.

There is 72 countries and territories participated in CWG 2022 and each team has revealed their athletes to represent them in Birmingham 2022. Team Scotland named a 201 strong athlete squad take part in 16 sports. Here is some of the biggest athlete names hope to bring gold for Scotland:

Jemma Reekie (Athletics)
Jemma Reekie is a Scottish middle-distance runner and She comes fourth place in the 800 metres at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. She also achieved a rare double at the European U23 Championships 2019 by winning both the 800m & 1500 metres events.

Jake Heyward (Athletics)
The 23 years old Jake Heyward will be participate in the 1500m event in CWG 2022. He turned professional only two years ago but quickly achieve success by smashing Neil Horsfield’s Welsh 1500m record at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Jeremiah Azu (Athletics)
Jeremiah Azu is a 100m sprinter from Cardiff who make his debut in commonwealth games by taking part at Birmingham 2022. He became European U23 champion last year and dominated many championships only at 23 years old. Recently at British Athletics Championships he comes first place in 100m.

Matt Richards (swimming)
21 years old Matt Richards came into global attention after winning a gold medal at Tokyo summer Olympics 2020 in 4×200 Freestyle. only at 18 years old, He became the first Welshman to win a gold medal at Olympics.

After Olympic success, he again win a gold in the European Championships 2020 in 4x100m mixed freestyle and silver in both 4x200m relay freestyle
and 4x100m relay freestyle.

Anna Hursey (Table tennis)
At the Gold Coast 2018 commonwealth games Anna Hursey made history by becoming the youngest ever athlete to participate in CWG games, at just 11 years old, after a year she debut her senior international. In 2021 she earned highest ranking in table tennis – number 1 in Europe and number 2 in the world in the under 15 category. Same year, she became a bronze doubles medallist at the 2021 World Youth Championships.

Geraint Thomas (cycling)
Geraint Thomas a cyclist from Cardiff, recently won the 2018 Tour De France race. and became the first British rider ever to win this stage. Four years ago, His Tour de France success led to him winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. He also participated in this year’s Tour De France and win third place.

At the age of 36, Thomas has won two world championships and won six world cups. He is also a double Olympic champion and a former world champion On the track.

Natalie Powell (Judo)
Natalie Powell’s success story will impress everyone, because of her studying alongside her sporting career. While she studying biomedical science at Cardiff University she competing in Judo and become the first Welsh judo athlete champion in Commonwealth games 2014. She also took part in both Tokyo 2020 and rio 2018.
