Tokyo Olympic Games Bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen, the Women’s world champion have qualified for the upcoming Commonwealth Games scheduled to begin on 28th July 2022 in Birmingham.
After a successful three-day trial that commenced here on Saturday, Indian athletes Nikhat, Lovlina, Nitu, and Jasmine fixed their place in Birmingham for the CWG 2022 event. After emerging victorious in a trial round, Nikhat will participate in the 50 Kg category, Lovlina in 70 Kg, Nitu in 48 Kg while Jasmine in the 60 Kg category at Commonwealth games boxing.
Lovlina Borgohain after qualifying for the commonwealth games commented “Mentally, I was not strong enough. You have to get your focus right for any competition. I did not go into the world championships with enough preparation. But more than the training I will say my focus drifted”.
It was a tough competition in the final rounds of trials, where Neetu ousted Manju Rani 5-2 in the finals of the 48 Kg class, while Nikhat defeated Minakshi 7-0 in the 50 Kg finals.
Jasmine defeated her opponent Parveen with 6-1 points in the 60 kg weight class. It was at the Women’s World Boxing championship Parveen clinched the bronze medal but remained unsuccessful at the trials.
In the 70 Kg trials, Lovlina successfully claimed her victory with 7-1 points against Pooja.
